Most US companies pay dividends quarterly, but a smaller group pays every month. Monthly payers are mostly real estate investment trusts (REITs), business development companies (BDCs), mortgage REITs and royalty trusts, businesses built to pass most of their cash flow to shareholders. Monthly payments make income smoother and let reinvested dividends compound slightly faster. They do not make a dividend safer: many monthly payers carry high yields because the market prices in risk, so check the payout ratio, dividend history and debt before relying on the income.
